What I Did This Weekend February 8, 2010

Okay, first of all, I dropped off the end of the planet this weekend. You probably noticed that I didn’t even post my fave Instructables this week, partly because I’ve been busy, partly because I’ve been forgetting, and partly because even I think this blog needs to be better – the question is how.
Besides that, it’s been a fun weekend (I soooo need to start taking photos!). I was fooling around with an old empty bottle wondering what to do with it, and then I realized it was made out of lovely white plastic – so I drew on it! >:D It’s a guy holding up a wooden sign that says “Save the Coins!” Can you guess what I’m going to use it for?
I also had loads of fun making two whole batches of cookies! XD Me, my parents, my brother and sister-in-law, and my entire church group are now stuffed to the gills with cookies! Oh yeah, totally fun! One of them was a pistachio nut, coconut cream pudding cookie, and the other was an almond, banana pudding cookie. The banana one tasted like banana bread to me, but net time I think I’ll use pecans instead of almonds, and I’d prefer it will more banana flavor.
One more thing – I have the archive back in place on VacancyComics.com!!!!! XD This means that I just need to make some models and a few backgrounds and we’re back in business! I can’t wait!

I had a great culinary weekend! My sister made us apple fritters (I’ve been craving them for months!), my Mom taught me how to clean and prep chicken leg quarters and how to make baked fried chicken, and my brother taught me how to marinade and grill chicken! Yummmm!
Besides that, Mom and I must enjoy aching muscles because we worked hard and cut up a bunch more wood to heat my parents house. For some strange reason it was a little easier this time. Hmmm, can’t have anything to do with I’m getting used to it, right?
I did some more work on my comic strip. I now have two more that are almost ready to post.
Oh, one more thing – a friend of mine asked me on Friday if I could crochet a little hat and vest for the baby of a friend of hers. The poor little tike has a terminal form of dwarfism. My friend also mentioned that there is an ongoing need for little crocheted hats (I think she’s part of some support group for mothers who loose their tiny ones), so I’m going to see how many I can make for her.

This week, it’s all about keeping warm (and a few other things). I often tell people I’m related to the Abominable Snowman cause I just can’t keep warm. Maaaaaybe some of these will help.
It’s not just warm stuff though. There’s a thread rack which I’m going to put high on my projects list, and a mini meat smoker.
Ski Bike
Ha ha. This reminds me of one winter I was at a camp lodge with some friends and one of the guys brought a VCR and an old, portable, 3″ TV. On that small, and unusual setup we watch the Beatles movie Help. I thought it was strange, but I always did like the ski bike. What a way to go down the slopes – while sitting down – without getting your backside frozen.
Custom Fleece Hats
My brother learned how to sew by making his own fleece hats several years ago, but these designs cut the cake.
They’re so fun! I love the roman helmet! With this you could do just about anything! (Hmmm, a knight’s helmet, a dragon, funky hair, or perhaps an egghead – looks like an egg frying on your head
)
Electric Heated Clothes
All right! Finally! I was thinking of making some clothes by just taking an electric blanket and cutting it up (it probably wouldn’t work though – too much electrical troubles), but this is such a superior way to do it that there just isn’t a comparison. Hmmm, perhaps I could make an electric business suit. Maybe then I’d finally stay warm in the office.
Warning: Be careful when heating with electricity. The heat is made by purposely creating a short. That, and since it is combined with flammable fabric, this can easily cause a fire. Never leave clothing unattended while it is on, and NEVER SLEEP IN THESE CLOTHES!!!!!
Make Your Own Snuggie
Another great Instructable for staying warm, and saving money. Just as I thought, this is really easy to make – it’s just a blanket with sleeves. I personally would make it out of an acrylic blanket (or better yet, an acrylic/wool blend) though since polyester fleece is one of the coldest fabrics on Earth.
Part Pillow, Part Quilt – It’s a Quillow!
I used to have one of these! (Can’t remember where it is now.) We called it a quillow. Sometimes we’d fold out the blanket, stuff the pocket with something like a couple t-shirts, and then use it like a light-weight sleeping bag (but of course it wasn’t really a bag). Fun times.
Basically it’s just a blanket with a pocket for folding the blanket into for storage. It works best if you size the pocket mathematically (something like 1/3 of the width of the blanket and 1/4 the height) to make it easier to fold the blanket into it.
Thread Rack
All Right! The perfect Instructable for any sewer! I so need one of these! It’s basically a board with dowels sticking out at an angle to hold the thread. This person covered the board with fabric so they can store their needles on there too. Since I’m just starting out in the sewing arena, making my own thread rack would let me make a smaller one for my smaller collection. Plus I’m constantly loosing my needles. This is also great for needles with some thread still on them.
DIY Mini Meat Smoker
“Sorry sir, I don’t smoke.” “Then what’s that hickory scent.” “Oh, that? That’s my new mini meat smoker that I just made this morning. I’m cooking some hickory smoked ribs right now.” Oh yeah, this sounds way too good. XD (And my brother thought his jerky was good. Just you wait bro…)
Homes That Others Call Strange, I Call Cool January 26, 2010

Sometimes MSN has a super awesome article that I have to tell about. This time it was about some awesome homes that would be really cool to live in. Who needs a conversation piece when the whole house stirs conversation?
As usual, here are my faves:
A Rotating House
This kind of house is great for confusing a salesman (Uh, which is the front door?). Need to go from the backyard to the front without the hassle of going through the gate or the house? Just hop on and you’ll be there within a half hour. “Mom? Where’s the ketchup?” “On the porch in front of the kitchen.” “No, that’s the pepper. The ketchup is in front of the living room.”
The Nautilus
A perfect little home for a hermit. I wonder if the owners get dizzy going around and around? I must admit though, I love the window!
Subterra Castle
Made out of an old underground missile silo, this is a great home for the modern nuclear family. And if you’d rather not have 15,000,000 tons of dirt between you and sunshine, just install outside cameras and put curtains on your flat screens.
The best part? This guy now has a company that specializes in creating more home like his.
The Mushroom House
Sweet! I’ve always wanted to be a fairy princess. What better way to do that than to live in a mushroom house? This guy was an artist and had so much fun decorating his house that he just couldn’t keep it to little knick-knacks on the coffee table. As a DIYer, this would be uber awesome to build a house like this. (Oh no! She’s getting ideas! Run for your lives!!!)
Bubbles! XD
LOL! It’s the Barbapapa house! One of my favorite books when I was little was about this family of blob like creatures who made a house by packing cement around their large, round bodies. It was so fun with it’s funny bubble rooms that connected by little round holes. Sounds cozy and fun to me, and the rounded windows like the eye casing from an Ohm shell (referencing the movie Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) make it feel like you’re in a submarine.
The Round Room
It’s the Swiss Family Elves with their tree house made of giant gords! Another really fun house that would be perfect if your lot had tons of wonderful trees that you didn’t want to cut down. It looks like these little room modules (it would be super easy to add onto the house
) are made out of strips of wood that have been bent into shape. My question is, can it come with a crooked gord neck?
(Ooo! This would be great with the mushroom house!)

Ah, what a good weekend. Firstly I made about a billion (okay, more like a dozen) little beaded waterlilies. So beautiful, if I do say so myself. Sadly, I have tried finding a true pink Delica bead, but I’m having terrible luck. I’ve ordered “pink,” “rose,” “fuchsia,” “melon,” “violet,” etc. but none of them look like a true pink. I’ve decided that I’m just going to have to call them up and get some help from some other eyeballs (that aren’t seeing them on a computer screen).
And then I got a bunch of stuff done on my Vacancy Comics website. The site has a brand new look now, and I’m starting to put the archive back into place. After the archive is back on the website, I’m going to work on making some models and backgrounds to make it easier to make the comics. Hopefully then I can start being much more regular getting new ones up.
Munnyworld – DIY Toys! January 23, 2010

Okay, so I was minding my own business, browsing along deviantArt, when I spotted an ad for something that said do-it-yourself toys. Of course, like a good little girl, I don’t tend to click on ads, but this was intriguing (that and I haven’t been burned yet by the ads on deviantArt – yet).
Come to find out, it’s a product called Munnyworld. Do you guys remember those fabric bears that were popular a few years ago? You would color on them with some special fabric markers and then toss them in the washing machine when you wanted to start fresh. These are -somewhat- like those, but these are made out of sturdy vinyl and you can draw on them with good permanent markers, or acrylic paints, or whatever. Oh, and you can’t wash them to start over (hmm, I wonder if dry and wet erase markers would work on them).
So, if you want a little teddy bear that looks like Jacob from Twilight, or a cute dragon with native american tattoos, this is definitely a good place to start.

I was browsing through DeviantArt yesterday, when I came across aiwa-9 who makes some pretty fun tiny plushies, including some fun (and fat free
) desserts. She also had a couple really fun tutorials including how to make an adorable plushie toast.
I think I’ll try it out and make some mini plushies. Hmm, I think I’ll make some toast, a couple of pb&j pendants (you know, like “best friends” or something like that), an ice cream would be fun, definitely a cheesecake, and a …

Solar Powered Walkway Tiles
Wow! There are so many great Instructables on how to make your house super awesome! My family has been wanting to add stepping stones in our lawn for eons now (and the word eons isn’t too far from the truth). These solar powered ones would be perfect! (The question is if the yard gets enough solar. Hmmm.)
Make Your Own Cough Drops!
Sweet! With my allergy to red food coloring, I can’t eat some of the cough drops in the store. In fact, just the other week I was looking at some supplement drops, but the only one with more than just C had red food coloring in it. Now I can make my own! I just love DIY.
Copyright and Copyleft Gloves
Hehe. I just thought this joke was funny. I probably won’t be making these though. However, it’s also a tutorial on how to make your own custom patch. I desperately need this kind of thing on my new laptop case. It’s a gorgeous, professional case,… except for the flaming skull on the back. Certainly don’t want a potential employer to see that.

Aw shoot! I had forgotten that Monday was a holiday! (I so need to get decent Internet at home. I so wish I had better choices.)
Anyway, on Saturday we were all not feeling too good so we sat around watching TV all day long. I learned a new word though – Photic. It means light, or emitting light. That means I’m a photic fan! I like things like LEDs and EL wire and glow-in-the-dark, etc.
Now the real fun came on Monday – I helped my Mom do a bunch of sawing wood. She doesn’t have a furnace at the moment so we’ve been gathering wood for her wood stove. I had no idea I was so out of shape – OOOOWWWWW! I seriously need to get better exercise.
I’ve been making beaded Indian corn and tiny beaded stars for my sister. I’m making some jewelry for her. I also made another Fire Mountain Gems order including a whole bunch of wonderful Delica beads (my favorite seed beads). Except, I forgot to order some blue beads for my sister’s 4th of July earrings and some epoxy glue for all this beading I’m doing. Too bad the local area is seriously lacking in good bead stores (I can’t believe we have several sunglasses stores, but no beading stores). Oh well. I guess I have an excuse to make another order.
