Etsy Favs! October 21, 2009

I love Etsy! I guess before I continue I better tell you what Etsy is. Etsy is a site where crafters can sell their creations. It’s like a giant craft boutique, but on steroids.

Now I say it’s on steroids because all the craft boutiques I’ve ever been to were not just small potatoes, but minuscule bits of carbohydrates. We’re talking a couple dozen booths with nothing but strung beads (and they call that jewelry), another dozen or so selling dinky toys they bought at the local dollar store, and then a few immigrants thinking to make an extra buck selling blankets with Merilyn Monroe or Elvis on them. Not what I’d consider a serious crafters market.

Now on to Etsy – Everything is handmade (okay, so you are allowed to sell vintage – older than 30 years – and craft supplies, but we’ll ignore that for the time being), and even though you’ll always find hokey little paper flowers that a three-year-old could make, you also find some really awesome and unique things.

Here are some great examples:

That said, this isn’t your Grandma’s craft boutique! I’ve seen everything from bed sheets printed with wood grain, baby booties made out of ramen packages (warning: they’re just for decoration, not to be used on baby), and even some fascinating yarn wigs! I’ll never see that kind of stuff at my local Farmer’s Market! (Hmmm, unless I’m the one selling them there…)
